SGI President Ikeda’s Guidance
Chapter New Members
Kosen-rufu is an undertaking that will extend into the ten thousand years or more of the Latter Day with the aim of enabling people throughout the entire world to attain Buddhahood. For that to happen, there must be a steady and uninterrupted stream of disciples who carry on [Nichiren] Daishonin’s spirit and efforts. It is the Buddha’s wish that the flow of kosen-rufu, of widespread propagation of the Mystic Law, never cease.
[Nichiren] writes, “My disciples, form your ranks and follow me” (“The Actions of the Votary of the Lotus Sutra,” WND-1, 765) . . .
In another writing, the Daishonin declares: “Nichiren alone took the lead in carrying out the task of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth” (“The True Aspect of All Phenomena,” WND-1, 385). The courage to “take the lead” is the spirit of Nichiren Buddhism. We must be prepared to first stand up ourselves if we wish to truly become the Daishonin’s successors.
For that reason, we must stand up with firm resolve and take decisive action. Pioneers face many hardships, but those hardships provide all the more opportunity for undergoing great human revolution. When a single dedicated practitioner of the Lotus Sutra takes action for kosen-rufu, it will awaken others around them, inspiring first one and then another and another to follow suit. One person’s earnest efforts will definitely create a new page of history (December 2017 Living Buddhism, pp. 43–44).
