Artful Conservation

Photos by Tom Kelly / Burt Prinsen for Museo Atlántico.

The Museo Atlántico in Playa Blanca—the only underwater sculpture museum in Europe—opened to the public in March 2016. Located in the Canary Islands, the underwater museum is composed of several large-scale installations and more than 300 individual sculptures by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor. The sculptures act as artificial reefs that facilitate the reproduction of local species and enable marine biomass to flourish.
