Ikeda Wisdom Academy is an SGI-USA Youth Division movement to engage youth leaders in advanced study.
Review of The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, volume 5
With the Ikeda Wisdom Academy Exam Part II, covering volumes 4–6, approaching in January 2017, let’s review some of the material from The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, volume 5. Either on your own or as you study with friends, write in the answers to the questions below. Most important, have fun!
1. The “Benefits of Responding with Joy” chapter explains that we accumulate immense benefit “just by inviting someone to a discussion of the Lotus Sutra.” How would you explain the connection between propagation and benefit? (see pp. 50–52)
2. SGI President Ikeda says: “The sutra is condensed into this twenty-four character passage: ‘I deeply respect you. I would never slight you or behave arrogantly toward you. For if you carry out the bodhisattva practice you can become a Buddha without fail (p. 97).’ ” What motivates Bodhisattva Never Disparaging to continue to respect all people even though he himself was disrespected? (see pp. 95–101)
3. In the “Supernatural Powers of the Thus Come One” chapter, Shakyamuni entrusts Bodhisattva Superior Practices with the mission of propagating the Mystic Law. This points to the cause implicit in the “Life Span” chapter. What is this cause of Buddhahood and what is its significance? (see pp. 218–20)
4. President Ikeda says, “The ‘Entrustment’ chapter could therefore also be termed the ‘Succession’ chapter or the ‘Mentor and Disciple’ chapter (p. 237).” What is the relationship between entrustment of the Law and the oneness of mentor and disciple? (see pp. 237–40)
