Happy Mother's Day
Message From the General Director
To the noble Soka mothers of America,
On this very happy occasion of Mother’s Day, please accept my warmest congratulations along with my deepest appreciation for all that you are doing to support your families and the members of the SGI-USA.
I can only imagine your constant efforts, day in and day out, to look after and encourage your families, friends and comrades in faith.
There is no more appropriate expression of your vital mission than that which SGI President Ikeda expresses in the “Ode to Mothers” chapter of volume 24 of The New Human Revolution: “Soka mothers, living their lives as emissaries of the Buddha, are together forever with the sun of victory and happiness throughout the three existences” (p. 45). And referring to mothers as the antithesis of those who rouse people to war, he cites these lines from his poem “Mother” (see p. 48):
The compassionate love
cannot be restrained
by the fetters
by the icy walls of nationality,
or by the conflicts and
struggles of ideology.
The love of mothers,
like a straight-line path
between rice fields,
is the one emotion shared
by all people everywhere
“The key to opening a broad and certain path toward peace,” President Ikeda concludes, “lies in promoting these maternal virtues by which mothers carry out their human revolution and grow ever wiser” (p. 48).
I believe that “mothers” in this case refers not just to biological mothers, but in the broadest sense, to every woman in the SGI-USA who is nobly taking responsibility for moving our kosen-rufu movement forward through their countless, unseen actions to care for others, based on the most profound kind of prayer.
Nichiren Daishonin asserts that “one is the mother of ten thousand” (“A Sage and an Unenlightened Man,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 131). My fervent hope is that each of you will become the model in expanding your prayer, your state of life and your courage, sharing Buddhism and exerting yourself to care for others, leading the way for our organization and our country to enter into a glorious new era.
Please send my very best regards to your friends and families. Thank you once again!
SGI-USA General Director
