Josei Toda’s Passing

In 1958, after fulfilling every one of his vows for kosen-rufu, second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda’s noble life came to a close. He was 58. Standing alone amid the ruins of postwar Japan and carrying on the final injunction of founding Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Mr. Toda rebuilt the Soka Gakkai and achieved his lifetime membership goal of 750,000 households. This magnificent path will shine on eternally in the history of kosen-rufu. (see The Human Revolution, “Tranquil Light” and “New Dawn” chapters; The New Human Revolution, vol. 4, “Spring Storm” chapter)

Soka University Established

In November 1950, Mr. Toda shared with a young Daisaku Ikeda his vision to establish a Soka University, entrusting his disciple with its realization. Ikeda Sensei poured his life into making this a reality, and, on April 2, 1971, Soka University officially opened. On April 9, 1978, Tokyo Soka Elementary School celebrated its first entrance ceremony. This year marks 45 years since the Soka school system has included kindergarten through college.
