Josei Toda’s Passing
In 1958, after fulfilling every one of his vows for kosen-rufu, second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda’s noble life came to a close. He was 58. Standing alone amid the ruins of postwar Japan and carrying on the final injunction of founding Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Mr. Toda rebuilt the Soka Gakkai and achieved his lifetime membership goal of 750,000 households. This magnificent path will shine on eternally in the history of kosen-rufu. Soka University Established
In November 1950, Mr. Toda shared with a young Daisaku Ikeda his vision to establish a Soka University, entrusting his disciple with its realization. Ikeda Sensei poured his life into making this a reality, and, on April 2, 1971, Soka University officially opened. On April 9, 1978, Tokyo Soka Elementary School celebrated its first entrance ceremony. This year marks 45 years since the Soka school system has included kindergarten through college. First Publication of the Seikyo Shimbun
In 1951, the Soka Gakkai started a newspaper, the Seikyo Shimbun, with 5,000 printed copies of a two-page broadsheet. In July 1965, it became a daily newspaper; in January 1971, it became the 12-page daily newspaper that it is today. The Seikyo Shimbun has developed significantly, with 215 countries and territories accessing it. 770 Years Since Nichiren Establishes his Teaching
In 1253, Nichiren Daishonin first publicly chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the fundamental Law for leading all people to enlightenment, and declared the establishment of his teaching. He was 32.
Publication of the Gosho zenshu
In 1952, Mr. Toda published the Nichiren Daishonin Gosho zenshu (The Collected Writings of Nichiren Dai-shonin) out of his wish to lead all people to enlightenment. On Nov. 18, 2021, the new edition of Gosho zenshu was published in Japan. (see The Human Revolution, “Overwhelming Joy” and “The Seventh Centennial” chapters)
