Recently I offered up a portion of the benefit from a recitation of the [Lotus Sutra] for the peaceful repose of your late husband [Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro]. I was unable to restrain my tears, thinking how important it is that people have fine children [such as Nanjo Tokimitsu]. King Wonderful Adornment was led to the way of the Buddha by his two sons [Pure Storehouse and Pure Eye].

“Reply to Ueno,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 2, p. 495

The benefit of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo pervades the ten directions and three existences—past, present and future—enfolding our deceased loved ones and friends in the light of infinite happiness and good fortune. The bonds of those connected by the Mystic Law are eternal, transcending life and death.

Nichiren Daishonin watches over us as we walk this path that enables us to repay our gratitude to our parents on the most profound level. Our unstinting efforts for kosen-rufu in the chosen places of our mission are the best possible offering we can make for the eternal happiness of our departed loved ones. They are a light of hope for the future.

Let’s enact inspiring dramas of spiritual triumph, savoring joy in both life and death!
