5 Keys to Making Friends in My Community

These following points are adapted from Ikeda Sensei’s essay published in the Sept. 20, 2009, and Sept. 21, 2009, issues of the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper, Seikyo Shimbun.

1) Pray For My Community’s Prosperity

Chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to ensure that my city is safe and peaceful, and that my neighbors and fellow residents are protected.

2) Be Courteous

Say hello to my neighbors and endeavor to have friendly exchanges with them.

3) Be Considerate

Strive to foster trust and widen my circle of friendship through my own wise words and actions.

4) Create a network of mutual support

The most admirable association we can form is one in which we mutually encourage, support and help one another grow.

5) Acknowledge our relationships

Remember that it is because of profound karmic ties that I became neighbors with the people around me.
