Kentucky Members: “It’s Our Time”

MAC SHIOMI

The newly renovated SGI-USA Kentucky Buddhist Center opened its doors on Dec. 15, coinciding with the members’ kickoff toward 2020, the 60th anniversary of kosen-rufu in America. The anniversary takes on even more significance because it also commemorates 60 years since the first SGI member emerged in Kentucky.

In a rousing celebration, three people began their Buddhist practice, including two youth, representing members’ efforts to introduce Nichiren Buddhism to more young people in the state.

Another highlight was the receipt of a proclamation from the mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, which acknowledges the dedication of SGI members to their community, while praising SGI President Ikeda’s efforts to promote peace.

Indiana-Kentucky Region Vice Women’s Leader Hettie Bailey said the members are chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo abundantly and asking themselves, How much more can we reply to Sensei this year? “We are deepening our connection with our mentor more than ever,” she said, adding that they are determined to contribute to the SGI-USA’s effort in 2020 to introduce 6,000 new youth for the sake of kosen-rufu. “We have to work with the youth, encourage them and help them run with President Ikeda at this time,” Ms. Bailey said. “By deepening our prayers and creating groups in all districts, we will raise youth who can carry on Sensei’s legacy! It’s our time.”
