Praying for Everyone’s Safety and Well-Being

Words of Encouragement From Ikeda Sensei

Now that I am living in a remote region, I have no opportunity to meet with you in person. The thoughts I have in my heart can only be conveyed by way of messengers and letters. It is sad, sad indeed! As for this year of danger that you [Ota Saemon-no-jo] face, trust in me [my teachings].

“On the Importance of the ‘Expedient Means’ and ‘Life Span’ Chapters,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 2, p. 750

I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathies to all those who were affected by the recent powerful earthquake that struck Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures as well as surrounding areas of Japan [on February 13].

In this letter, Nichiren Daishonin expresses his disappointment at not being able to meet with his disciple Ota Saemon-no-jo, who lived far away. And he encourages him wholeheartedly, offering the firm assurance: “How could Brahma, Shakra, the gods of the sun and moon, and the host of stars fail to watch over you day and night, morning and evening?” (WND-2, 750).

In the same spirit as the Daishonin and together with fellow members everywhere, I am praying earnestly for the safety and well-being of our dear Tohoku Soka family.

Translated from the February 17, 2021 Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper.
