It Is 90 seconds to Midnight

Shortly after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists created the Doomsday Clock—a symbolic piece that conveys the time that remains before the extinction of the human race. This year, the hands of the Doomsday Clock moved to 90 seconds to midnight, largely because of the war in Ukraine and the potential use of nuclear weapons. It is the closest it has ever been to the symbolic hour of apocalypse.

On Jan. 11, 2023, Ikeda Sensei issued a statement calling for action aimed at restoring peace in Ukraine and offered steps to lessen the risk of the use of nuclear weapons. Read the full statement in the March 2023 Living Buddhism, pp. 13–18.
