Brief Guidances

Unshakable Faith Is the Key to Happiness

Words of Encouragement From Ikeda Sensei

Now when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they should abide in the mind of faith that “from thought to thought never entertains doubt” [see The Lotus Sutra and Its Opening and Closing Sutras, 347].

It’s important to have absolute faith in the Mystic Law. Faith is the sharp sword that cuts through fundamental ignorance; it is the means through which we are able to obtain the wisdom of the Buddhas of the three existences (see OTT, 54). As the Daishonin assures us: “Although [we] may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbor doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood” (“The Opening of the Eyes,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 283).

My mentor, second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda, declared that firm conviction, or unshakable faith, is crucial in all things. When we have strong faith in the Gohonzon, our inner sun will shine brightly. In challenging times, let’s chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with a vow for kosen-rufu, confident that our lives embody the Mystic Law, and open the way forward to victory!

Translated from the December 25, 2021 Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper.
