Hilary Pecis is a contemporary American artist known for her vibrant and saturated paintings that transform ordinary scenes into rich details and joyful compositions. Born in California in 1979, Pecis grew up in an environment that encouraged creativity. From an early age, she developed an interest in art, inspired by visual elements she encountered while watching television. These early influences helped shape her sensitivity to color, composition and storytelling.

Pecis pursued her formal education at the California College of the Arts, where she earned both her bachelor of fine arts and master of fine arts degrees. Time allowed her to refine her artistic voice and experiment with different mediums. Early in her career, she worked with collage, creating compositions from magazine cutouts, as well as digital collages. This practice sharpened her eye for layering, pattern and spatial relationships, which later became central to her paintings.

In 2008, Pecis received the Murphy and Cadogan Fellowship from the San Francisco Arts Commission, an award that recognized her emerging talent and supported her artistic development. This acknowledgement marked an important milestone, helping her to establish her presence in the contemporary art world.

From around 2014, Pecis began to focus more on painting. She developed a distinctive style using acrylic paint, often depicting interiors, still life and everyday moments. Her work is characterized by bold colors, flattened perspectives and intricate details that invite viewers to linger. Rather than presenting reality as it is, she turns familiar domestic scenes into vibrant spaces filled with warmth and personality.

On the cover, Studio Vases (2022) features a canvas embraced by blooming flowers and vibrant colors that immediately capture the viewer’s attention. It reflects her signature style, full of warmth and rich in detail, drawing viewers into a lively scene.

By 2020, Pecis was working in a shared warehouse studio alongside other women artists, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. This environment further nurtured her creativity and productivity during a period of increasing recognition.

Pecis’ paintings have been exhibited widely, including recent shows such as “Wandering” (2025), which continue to explore themes of memory and the beauty of everyday life. Her work is also held in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, reflecting her growing influence and significance in contemporary art.

Through her work, Pecis elevates the ordinary, transforming everyday experiences into a celebration of color and lived experiences.
