The single word “belief” is the sharp sword with which one confronts and overcomes fundamental darkness or ignorance.[1] The commentary [T’ien-t’ai’s Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra] says, “Belief means to be without doubt.” You should think about this.

It is 65 years since my mentor, second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda, made his landmark declaration calling on us to safeguard humanity’s right to life.[2] Our network of individuals who champion a philosophy of respect for the dignity of life now spans the globe. The shared challenge of mentor and disciple continues. Let us vanquish the devilish nature of fundamental ignorance with the lion’s roar of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

Though perhaps painstaking and unseen, our efforts to awaken others through one-to-one dialogue, based on our firm belief that all people possess the Buddha nature, are the most fundamental source of hope for peace.
