Real ID Deadline Extended to Oct. 1, 2021

TETRA IMAGES / GETTY IMAGES

Due to circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the national emergency declaration, the Department of Homeland Security is extending the Real ID enforcement deadline by a year. The new deadline is Oct. 1, 2021.

This change reflects implementation of the last phase of a federal law known as the Real ID Act, which requires every U.S. air traveler to present a Real ID compliant license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, to board a domestic flight.

If your license or ID card is marked with a star in the upper-right corner, it is compliant with the Real ID Act. For more information, please visit tsa.gov/real-id.
