Brief Guidances

Life Is the Most Precious of All Treasures

Words of Encouragement From Ikeda Sensei

Life is the most precious of all treasures. Even one extra day of life is worth more than ten million ryō of gold.

“On Prolonging One’s Life Span,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 955

Nichiren Daishonin offered sincere prayers for the recovery of the lay nun Toki, who had been struggling with illness while taking care of an elderly family member. He instructs her not only to challenge the devil of illness with strong faith but also to seek treatment from an excellent physician (see WND-1, 955).

Health care professionals and caregivers, as well as those battling illnesses themselves, are engaged in a noble effort to save and protect life, which is infinitely precious. Each day we strive together with the Mystic Law, we can accumulate great benefit surpassing all the treasures of the universe.

Together let’s demonstrate the Buddhist principle of “prolonging one’s life through faith”!
