Brief Guidances

Confidently Engage in Dialogue to Create a Better World

by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda

If you care anything about your personal security, you should first of all pray for order and tranquillity throughout the four quarters of the land, should you not?

Confidently Engage in Dialogue to Create a Better World

Our great vow is to realize Nichiren Daishonin’s ideal of “establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land.” Achieving that goal starts with earnestly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for the happiness of ourselves and others, and then taking action based on those prayers by sincerely talking with the people around us. Through our prayers, actions and words, we can help many individuals form a connection with Nichiren Buddhism, which will lead them to become happy.

My mentor, second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda, fervently wished to eliminate misery and suffering from the world and create a realm of peace and happiness for all. Toward that end, let us continue to expand our network of friendship and trust with vibrant courage and joy! WT

And you demons, by making this man [Nanjo Tokimitsu] suffer, are you trying to . . . become the archenemy of the Buddhas of the ten directions in the three existences? . . . Should you not cure this man’s illness immediately, act rather as his protectors, and escape from the grievous sufferings that are the lot of demons?

“The Proof of the Lotus Sutra” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 1109

Bravely Confronting Illness

In this letter, Nichiren Daishonin encourages Nanjo Tokimitsu, who is battling a serious illness, never to be intimidated by the threats of any devilish function. He sternly admonishes the negative functions assailing his young disciple, demanding that they immediately cure him and function instead as benevolent forces to protect him.

Later, Tokimitsu recovered, extending his life for another 50 years and carrying out his mission for kosen-rufu.

As practitioners of the Mystic Law, let’s live out our lives together with the Daishonin and cultivate a powerful life force that can vanquish the devil of illness. Let’s always encourage and support our fellow members. WT
