Brief Guidances

The Place Where We Are Is the Land of Eternally Tranquil Light

Words of Encouragement From Ikeda Sensei

Now, when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are revealing that the phantom city is none other than the treasure land. These words are based on the parable of the phantom city and the treasure land that appears in the Lotus Sutra./ref] These mountain valleys and broad plains where we live are all, every one of them, treasure lands of Eternally Tranquil Light.

The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 77

We can reveal the great life state of Buddhahood where we are right now, not in some future time or place. This is the essence of Nichiren Buddhism.

The place where we are engaged with the struggles of daily life is the land of Eternally Tranquil Light. Those times when we are challenging difficulties are opportunities for dynamic growth.

When we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and make steady efforts toward achieving our goals, we can enact brilliant dramas of human revolution. This is what it means to live a life based on the principle that “the phantom city is none other than the treasure land.”

Translated from the May 20, 2021 Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper.
