Making a Vow to Transform Karma Into Mission

Words of Encouragement From Ikeda Sensei

Even though one neither reads nor studies the [Lotus Sutra], chanting the title [Myoho-renge-kyo] alone is the source of tremendous good fortune. The sutra teaches that women, evil men, and those in the realms of animals and hell—in fact, all the beings of the Ten Worlds—can attain Buddhahood in their present form.

“The One Essential Phrase,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol.1 p. 923

Nichiren Buddhism is a great, hope-filled philosophy that enables us to transform any negative karma into mission. Through doing our human revolution by overcoming hardships, let’s demonstrate the power of the Mystic Law to people around the world. When we take action to fulfill our vow as Bodhisattvas of the Earth, difficult obstacles become a springboard for victory.

Viewed in the light of Nichiren Buddhism, all the sufferings and challenges we undergo are for the sake of attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime and realizing lasting happiness.

I hope you will each rouse courage and strive to attain the indestructible life state of Buddhahood.

Translated from the January 23, 2019, Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai daily newspaper.
