One passage from … [T’ien-t’ai’s Great Concentration and Insight] reads: “As practice progresses and understanding grows, the three obstacles and four devils emerge in confusing form, vying with one another to interfere. … One should be neither influenced nor frightened by them. If one falls under their influence, one will be led into the paths of evil. If one is frightened by them, one will be prevented from practicing the correct teaching.” This statement not only applies to me, but also is a guide for my followers. Reverently make this teaching your own, and transmit it as an axiom of faith for future generations.
“Letter to the Brothers,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 501
The three obstacles and four devils arise because we practice and spread the correct teaching of Buddhism. Having the courage to confront them without being intimidated or swayed is proof of true practice and study.
“Faith for overcoming obstacles,” [1] the proud spirit of Soka mentors and disciples, is a guideline and teaching of Nichiren Daishonin that we have “made our own and transmitted.”
Precisely because the times are so challenging, let’s forge ahead boldly, taking to heart the Daishonin’s words “the wise will rejoice”![2] For our triumphant dramas of human revolution will become “an axiom of faith for future generations,” a source of inspiration for realizing lasting happiness and peace for all people.
