April 9 World Tribune: Sowing the Seeds of Soka Education
On March 28, motivated by a desire to learn more about pursuing higher education at Soka University of America, over 1,000 SGI-USA elementary and junior high school division members, as well as their families and supporters, join a virtual nationwide webinar hosted by the SGI-USA future division.
April 16 World Tribune: Eternal Bonds
On April 1, Sensei and Mrs. Ikeda conduct gongyo at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters in Tokyo, honoring the anniversary of second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda’s passing on April 2, 1958. They also commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Soka University, praying for the university’s development and the happiness and victory of all students and graduates, including those from overseas.
They chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in appreciation for the faculty, staff, students’ family members and the university’s supporters.
May 3 World Tribune: Daisaku Ikeda Receives Human Rights Award
The American Educational Research Association bestows upon Daisaku Ikeda the Ella Baker/Septima Clark Human Rights Award to honor his efforts in peace building, human rights and education.
May 14 World Tribune: Ikeda Sensei Pens May 3 Poems
In celebration of May 3—Soka Gakkai Day and Soka Gakkai Mother’s Day—Sensei composes three poems, calling on members to “change poison into medicine / by forging heart-to-heart bonds / in the true spirit of Soka.” This year marks the 70th anniversary of Josei Toda’s inauguration as second Soka Gakkai president and the 61st anniversary of Sensei’s inauguration as third president.
May 14 World Tribune: Daisaku Ikeda College Named
Soka University of America’s Aliso Viejo campus marked its 20th anniversary as a liberal arts institution that champions education for global citizenship by naming its undergraduate program Daisaku Ikeda College. This follows the tradition of other American institutions paying tribute to those whose contributions have greatly influenced the school’s vision and development.
May 21 World Tribune: Oakland Names ‘Daisaku Ikeda Way’
On May 3, Soka Gakkai Day, the Northern California city of Oakland declares that the two-block stretch of Opal Street in front of the SGI-USA Oakland Buddhist Center be named to honor Daisaku Ikeda and the SGI-USA community.
June 4 World Tribune: Poet Laureate Daisaku Ikeda Day
The City of Glen Cove, New York, proclaims June 20, 2021, Poet Laureate Daisaku Ikeda Day in commemoration of his visit there 40 years ago, when he penned the iconic poem “To My Beloved Young American Friends—Youthful Bodhisattvas of the Earth.”

June 11 World Tribune: Daisaku Ikeda’s Message to SUA’s Class of 2021
Soka University of America Founder Daisaku Ikeda sends a message to the Class of 2021 Commencement Ceremony, which was held on May 28. In it, he writes to the graduates: “May you brighten civilization in the 21st century like the dawn beaming with hope!”
June 11 World Tribune: Making Our Dreams a Reality in Uncertain Times
On April 17, some 400 SGI-USA student division members and guests attend a virtual lecture led by SGI-USA Senior Vice General Director Tariq Hasan, who emphasized the importance of developing a “spiritual core” to win over ourselves, and transform our lives and our society in the process.
June 18 World Tribune: Progress Vibrantly in Your Human Revolution!
Sensei and Mrs. Ikeda send a message to young women worldwide to commemorate the SGI Ikeda Kayo-kai Day on June 4. In the message, they call on young women to continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo no matter what challenges they face and shine in their own true way.
June 18 World Tribune: ‘Let Your Life With Others Create’
On May 28, the Rev. James Lawson, leading nonviolence theorist and tactician of the Civil Rights Movement, gives a keynote address at Soka University of America’s Class of 2021 commencement ceremony in which he says: “May I then urge you to be a human being who is a citizen of the human race. Learn the power of life, the power of love, the power of what I call soul force.”
July 16 World Tribune: Sensei and Mrs. Ikeda Conduct Gongyo at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters
Sensei and Mrs. Ikeda visit the Soka Gakkai Headquarters in Tokyo on July 2, ahead of July 3, the anniversary of second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda’s release from prison in 1945. They offer heartfelt prayers for everyone’s victory, happiness, good fortune and health.
July 16 World Tribune: Toward an Age of Peace in the 21st Century
SGI-USA members hold virtual celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of Sensei’s June–July 1996 visit to the U.S. in Denver; New York; Weston, Florida; El Paso, Texas; and Los Angeles.
Aug. 6 World Tribune: ‘Discarding the Shallow and Seeking the Profound’
At the Fourth Soka Gakkai Headquarters Leaders Meeting Toward Our Centennial, held jointly with the Youth Division General Meeting, on July 7, three calligraphies by Sensei are unveiled: “The Honor of Walking the Great Path to Victory”; and to honor the 70th anniversaries of the young men’s and young women’s divisions, “Discarding the Shallow and Seeking the Profound” and “The Heart of a Person of Courage.”
