The Mariana Trench, located in the westernPacific Ocean about 124 miles east of the Mariana Islands, contains the deepest known points on Earth. It is crescent-shaped and measures about 1,580 miles long and 43 miles wide. By comparison: if Mount Everest were placed into the trench at this point, its peak would still be 1.2 miles under water.
