50K Festival Date and Locations Announced!

The SGI-USA announced the date, Sept. 23, 2018, and locations of the 50,000 Lions of Justice Festival, to be held in nine major U.S. cities.

New Master’s Program Examines Soka Education and Global Citizenship

CHICAGO, Jan. 2—DePaul University, the nation’s largest Catholic University, ushered in 2018 by introducing the first master’s in education of its kind—Value-Creating Education for Global Citizenship. It launched on Jan. 2, the 90th birthday of Daisaku Ikeda, founder of the Soka schools system. The program offers a comprehensive examination of the educational philosophies and practices of Soka educators Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda and Daisaku Ikeda.

FEBRUARY 9 WORLD TRIBUNE
A Brilliant Achievement for Guam

Plans were revealed for a new SGI-USA center and mentor-disciple museum in Guam, adjacent to the site of the SGI’s establishment in 1975.

The SGI-USA has purchased a plot of land adjacent to the International Trade Center (building pictured in the back), which is the site of the founding of the SGI on Jan. 26, 1975, in Tamuning, Guam. Plans are underway to build a new SGI-USA center and a mentor-disciple museum. The SGI Peace Lane was unveiled in January 2015 to commemorate the SGI’s 40th anniversary.

Lions of Justice Vow

In an event that SGI President Ikeda said signaled “a new era of kosen-rufu for America,” 201 youth representatives traveled to Japan to take part in the first SGI-USA Chapter Through National Youth Leaders Training Course from Feb. 1–4 in Tokyo and Kansai.

Creating a New Century of Happiness and Peace

TOKYO, March 11—In a powerful tribute to the 60th anniversary of March 16, Kosen-rufu Day, 750,000 SGI youth participated in the World Youth General Meeting. The meeting, hosted from Soka University in Tokyo, was broadcast live to 1,500 venues throughout Japan and other parts of the world.

The final chapter of SGI President Ikeda’s epic novel, The New Human Revolution, began. Worldtribune.org published new installments as they appeared in the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper.

Nearly 5,400 SGI-USA youth leaders launched the six-month countdown to the 50,000 Lions of Justice Festival with powerful Unit Through National Youth Leaders Meetings, held on March 18 across the country. There, three keys to victory were shared toward the Sept. 23 festival: 1) “Bring Your Squad of 6,” 2) registration and 3) shakubuku.

SGI Joins Statement Against Nuclear Weapons

GENEVA, April 25—The SGI joined the group Faith Communities Concerned about Nuclear Weapons to present a powerful statement at the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) held in Geneva. The NPT is regarded as the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and an essential foundation for the pursuit of nuclear disarmament.

Embarking “On the Path of Peace”

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., May 25—Soka University of America graduated the Class of 2018. In a poignant message, SUA Founder Daisaku Ikeda encouraged the students to always uphold hope, sincerity and unrelenting
tenacity. Susi Snyder served as the commencement speaker. She is the Nuclear Disarmament Program Manager for the Netherlands-based peace organization PAX and also serves as a member of the International
Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.

SGI President Receives 381st Academic Honor

Cagayan State University of the Philippines, on June 21, conferred an honorary doctorate of humane letters upon SGI President Ikeda in recognition of his contributions to peace and education. The ceremony was held at Soka University, in Tokyo, with Dr. Urdujah A. Tejada, presidentof Cagayan State University.

“Human Advancement Does Not Need Special People”

The Rev. James Lawson, the leading nonviolence theorist and tactician of the Civil Rights Movement, spoke to the World Tribune on the role of youth, peace and his advice to the 50,000 Lions of Justice.

He has led these classes for over 20 years. “This is not per se a workshop for activists,” he said. “Gandhi said that oftentimes doing something that is not connected with the realities of where you are is like doing nothing . . . I don’t come at this from a theoretical stance but from a far more human-engaged stance of trying to live in the 20th century and now in the 21st century.” On Sept. 22, Rev. Lawson will turn 90. Soka University of America (SUA) was ranked No. 22 in National Liberal Arts Colleges by the 2019 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings. The ranking was a tie among SUA, Bates College and the United States Naval Academy.

The New Human Revolution Concludes

KARUIZAWA, Japan, Aug. 6—After 25 years in the making, SGI President Ikeda completed his monumental work at age 90. The New Human Revolution is a 30-volume novelized history of the Soka Gakkai and the SGI following Daisaku Ikeda’s inauguration as the third Soka Gakkai president in 1960.

Lawrence Edward Carter Sr. launched his book tour for A Baptist Preacher’s Buddhist Teacher (Middleway Press). Dr. Carter, who is the founding dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, recalls in his new book “how my interfaith journey with Daisaku Ikeda made me a better Christian.”
