The 50,000 Lions of Justice Festival held in September was inspired by SGI President Ikeda’s declaration to SGI members around the world:

Please promise with me to work hard over the next two years with our fellow members around the world to expand our network of Bodhisattvas of the Earth, and forge ahead with energy, wisdom and good cheer to make the triumph of mentor and disciple resound into the eternal future of the Latter Day of the Law. (Oct. 7, 2016, World Tribune, p. 3)

November marks the conclusion of this important two-year period, which the SGI-USA will mark with vibrant November district general meetings across the country commemorating the 88th anniversary of the Soka Gakkai’s founding on Nov. 18, 1930.

In a recent article titled “What Comes After Sept. 23?” SGI-USA General Director Adin Strauss noted that it’s important to channel the youthful passion and power of the 50,000 Lions of Justice movement into each district and to revolutionize our discussion meetings. “Immediately after the festival, we will initiate a new phase of expanding our movement centered on discussion meetings,” Mr. Strauss wrote. “I urge the dedicated leaders and members planning these gatherings to unite in front of the Gohonzon to create meetings that are relevant to people of all ages, with the determination to vastly expand attendance at the discussion meetings, especially drawing more young people” (see Aug. 10, 2018, World Tribune, p. 6).

The SGI-USA has announced its nationwide goal of gathering 50,000 people—20,000 of whom will be youth division members and youth guests—at the November district discussion meetings. Here are three key actions you can take now toward a successful commemorative meeting:

1. Set a goal
Each district is encouraged to come up with an attendance goal (for both overall participation and youth attendance, which will include youth guests).

2. Review your 50K list
Please utilize your 50K Festival list to invite and confirm youth members and youth guests.

3. Put the youth in the forefront
Invite youth members to attend the planning meeting, and confirm a chapter through national youth leader as the central figure for the discussion meeting. These meetings should be led by the youth.

The following is an excerpt from SGI President Ikeda’s guidance on Sept. 3, 2016, which inspired the 50,000 Lions of Justice Festival and subsequent goal of gathering 50,000 people at discussion meetings in November—20,000 of whom will be youth.

In “Letter from Sado,” Nichiren [Daishonin] observes: “The most dreadful things in the world are the pain of fire, the flashing of swords, and the shadow of death” (“Letter from Sado,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 301). Even today, people around the world live in fear of violence and war, shudder at destruction caused by natural disasters and accidents, and are racked by the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness and death.

That is precisely why we of the SGI, who share the great vow of Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, need to press ahead with ever-greater energy in our courageous and sincere efforts to transform the destiny of humankind.

In his Declaration for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (issued on Sept. 8, 1957), [second Soka Gakkai President Josei] Toda underscored the right to life of all people on our planet and passionately denounced any devilish force that would threaten that right. Next year [2017] will mark the 60th anniversary of this declaration, which Mr. Toda issued as a final injunction to the youth division.

I would now like to present three mottoes to the youth, who are rising up to shoulder the great and ever-more diverse and expansive Soka network for peace, culture and education. My dear young friends, may you:

1. Be the pillar of peace for all the world’s peoples!

2. Be the eyes of respect for the dignity of life!

3. Be the great ship of hope for the triumph of humanity!

In two years [2018], we will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the completion of the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu. With Soka Gakkai Foundation Day, Nov. 18, 2018, as the next goal for the advance of the Soka family, let us joyfully scale the summit of kosen-rufu through compassionate propagation, spreading the Mystic Law even more widely.

Please promise with me to work hard over the next two years with our fellow members around the world to expand our network of Bodhisattvas of the Earth, and forge ahead with energy, wisdom and good cheer to make the triumph of mentor and disciple resound into the eternal future of the Latter Day of the Law.
