On Nov. 5, a gunman opened fire on parishioners at a small Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killing 26 people. The SGI-USA responded to this senseless act of violence with the following statement.

We offer our most profound condolences to the family and loved ones of those killed in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

We are horrified and deeply saddened by this latest mass shooting. Action is needed to prevent atrocities like this from continuing in our society. To do nothing is to accept mass shootings as inevitable. We reject this idea categorically.

As the Soka community, our conviction is stronger than ever that respect for the dignity of life and fearless dialogue among people are vital for the future of our society and humankind in general.

It is also our conviction that since human beings created this problem, human beings can and must solve it.
