A young girl greets a gentle, old giant, a 120-year-old Aldabra giant tortoise to be exact, at the La Vanille Nature Park on the island of Mauritius, located in Southern Africa about 500 miles east of Madagascar. Through a breeding program, La Vanille brought back the giant tortoise species from near extinction. As people around the globe celebrated World Wildlife Day on March 3, this year’s theme, “Listen to the Young Voices,” spotlighted young people’s indispensable role in ensuring the continued protection of the world’s wildlife.
