A Landmark Vote to Ban Nuclear Weapons

The United Nations member states on Oct. 27 voted overwhelmingly (with 123 nations) to begin negotiations on a nuclear disarmament treaty. The First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) decided to convene in 2017 for a U.N. conference to negotiate a “legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination.”
