Athletes compete in the swim portion of the 2016 Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Oct. 8. In a test of endurance and strength, the competition involves a 2.4-mile open-water swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and then a 26.2 mile-marathon. SGI-USA member Michael Somsan, of Gilbert, Ariz., was among five athletes with disabilities who participated (see A Champion Perseveres for his experience).
