Effectively practicing Nichiren Buddhism requires dynamically balancing the three pillars of faith, practice and study. As we strengthen our practice and study of Buddhism, we are able to strengthen our faith. And the stronger our faith, the more benefit and growth we see from our practice and study.

Nichiren Daishonin writes: “Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith” (“The True Aspect of All Phenomena,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 386).

To help its members deepen their conviction in faith, the SGI has had a longstanding tradition of holding exams. Addressing those taking an exam, SGI President Ikeda writes: “I am praying earnestly that everyone sitting for these exams will achieve victory through their seeking spirit and become experts in winning in life. I would also like to express my sincerest gratitude to all those who are helping them study and in other ways supporting them behind the scenes” (Jan. 15, 2016, World Tribune, p. 3).

This October, the 2016 Introductory Exam offers SGI-USA members a great opportunity to deepen the pillar of study. The exam material highlights the history and philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism, offering members a way to further their understanding of key elements for correct Buddhist practice.

The exam, which will be held from Oct. 22–30, is for SGI-USA members and guests who have not taken or passed the exam in previous years. The exam will cover the content of the book An Introduction to Buddhism.

Intro Exam BookletIn addition, to help members prepare for the exam, the “Introductory Exam Workbook,” containing 40 sample questions, is available as a special pullout in the September 2016 Living Buddhism. The exam questions will be based on these 40 questions.
