Commemorating May 3, Soka Gakkai Day, the City of Torrance, in California, declared May 3, 2016, SGI Founding Presidents Appreciation Day. The proclamation, signed by Mayor Patrick J. Furey, acknowledges the three founding Soka Gakkai presidents’ “outstanding contributions to solving humankind’s problems and promoting peace in our world.” The citation also praises local SGI-USA members as “highly valued” members of the community who have dedicated themselves to such activities as cherry tree plantings in parks throughout Torrance, hosting the city’s annual cherry blossom festival and opening up the SGI-USA South Bay Buddhist Center to public events on peace and nuclear disarmament.
