The History of the Student Division

In March, SGI-USA student division members will be spear heading introduction-to-Buddhism meetings across the country to help as many people as possible become absolutely happy and to elevate the fundamental life condition of humanity. Here are some numbers related to the early days of the Soka Gakkai’s student division.

students gathered for the inaugural meeting of the student division under second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda on June 30, 1957.

The Human Revolution says of this meeting: “[The students] possessed the supreme asset: the belief that the Mystic Law existed within the ordinary mortal flesh of their own lives. None of them could be without a mission.”[1]The Human Revolution, p. 1605.

the year in July when 12,000 student division members attended the Fifth Student Division General Meeting, where the division’s flag was introduced. There, President Ikeda said, “The progress of the student division is the progress of kosen-rufu and directly linked to the progress of peace in Japan and throughout the world.”[2]The New Human Revolution, vol. 6, p. 271.

students came together in July 1963, for the Sixth Student Division General Meeting, where the campus club structure was announced. At that meeting, President Ikeda said: “I am blazing the trail with all my strength and being with the belief that you are my true successors. Can I count on you?”[3]The New Human Revolution, vol. 8, p. 112.
