The following is an excerpt from SGI President Ikeda’s essay published in the Dec. 25, 2015, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper.

The Year of Expansion in the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu (2016) will soon be here.

From the rich earth of encouragement, let us bring flowers of expansion to bloom—expansion of Buddhist dialogue, expansion of friendship, and expansion of the ranks of young and capable individuals.

What are the keys to achieving this? They are:

1) expanding our prayer
2) expanding our state of life
3) expanding our courage

By expanding these three aspects—our prayer, state of life and courage—let us joyously advance into a new era in our own lives, our communities and the world!

Nichiren Daishonin instructs his disciples: “Each of you should summon up the courage of a lion king” (“On Persecutions Befalling the Sage,” The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 997).

No matter what harsh winters of adversity we may encounter, let’s always challenge them resolutely with the heart of a lion king and send refreshing breezes of happiness that will call forth a beautiful springtime of world peace for our planet and all humanity.

Please take good care of your health. I hope you will enjoy a wonderful New Year’s holiday with your friends and loved ones.

In the coming year,
let us sing our ode to life,
filled with great joy,
sharing it widely.
